Why Diss Linux?

Written by ScottW on Aug 4th, 2008 | Filed under: Rants

I am not a red-headed step-child!

I keep wondering why Linux keeps getting the “red-headed step-child” routine when it’s so obviously not just some passing fad waiting on it’s time to end. Makes no sense to me. I can understand why M/$ fan-boys trash-talk it. They obviously like their bloated, insecure, slow-loading Windows machines and see nothing wrong with them what so ever. That and that’s all their companies use so they have no choice. (more…)

The Mystic Bird, a laptop and eBay

Written by ScottW on Jul 14th, 2008 | Filed under: News Briefs, Rants

You may remember from a previous post of mine that I was considering selling my laptop on eBay. Well, I tried doing just that except it turned out to be one of the worst experiences I’d had in a long time.

Let me fill you in:

I set up an account with PayPal first to allow for payment if the laptop should sell. I was being optimistic I suppose seeing as the times we’re in at the moment are taxing (no pun intended) our finances almost to the hilt depending on income.

After the PayPal account was set up I then set up an account at eBay. Talk about a confusing website. Never the less, I got the thing listed and set it for a 7 day auction. I just wanted to sell it to the first one who would cough up my asking price but for some reason, I couldn’t figure out how to do that. Oh well, no biggie. (more…)

Microhoo? Yasoft? No Way!

Written by ScottW on Feb 6th, 2008 | Filed under: Rants

Yeah, I know this is yet another among too many posts about this proposed mission that Microsoft has for buying Yahoo but I just had to toss my 2 cents worth out there. Even though I’m a big supporter of open source software I do understand many folk’s desire to continue using proprietary software either due to their job or they’re just too tied to Windows to try something else.

First, I think it would be a terrible mistake to allow Microsoft to buy Yahoo as it would obviously give them an unfair advantage over any and all competition. We all know how Microsoft loves to buy the competition instead of attempting to create anything new and worthy. Besides, just think of how the new name would look and sound. Microhoo? Yasoft? No Way!

Ever email those abuse@ accounts?

Written by ScottW on Feb 4th, 2008 | Filed under: Rants

I mean, you know the ones…abuse@ somedomain.com or abuse@ somewebhost.com. etc. These are the email accounts that one would send an email to to report any bad behavior discovered about a particular web site or spam coming from some server somewhere.

SpamWell, I tried that the other day because I’d noticed an increase in spam comments and trackbacks and wondered just where these were coming from. So I started clicking on the IP address listed along side each one to discover where they were from. It got interesting.

I had some from Chicago, Amsterdam, Australia, Florida, Texas just to mention a few. Hmm, OK. Let’s see what would happen if I emailed the respective accounts for abuse and reported the spam.
