The Mystic Bird, a laptop and eBay

Written by ScottW on Jul 14th, 2008 | Filed under: News Briefs, Rants

You may remember from a previous post of mine that I was considering selling my laptop on eBay. Well, I tried doing just that except it turned out to be one of the worst experiences I’d had in a long time.

Let me fill you in:

I set up an account with PayPal first to allow for payment if the laptop should sell. I was being optimistic I suppose seeing as the times we’re in at the moment are taxing (no pun intended) our finances almost to the hilt depending on income.

After the PayPal account was set up I then set up an account at eBay. Talk about a confusing website. Never the less, I got the thing listed and set it for a 7 day auction. I just wanted to sell it to the first one who would cough up my asking price but for some reason, I couldn’t figure out how to do that. Oh well, no biggie. (more…)

Aussie Schools Choose Gmail Over Outlook

GMail

Another win in the battle to take back lives from the corporate dark horse called Microsoft. I came across this report in my GoogleReader and thought it fit to reproduce here as this blog is pro open source by nature.

At TechCrunch they reported the news that the New South Wales Dept. of Education had decided to give Outlook/Exchange the boot and go with GMail for all it’s students. The faculty, which had also been using the M/$ product will instead go with an email application based off the Department’s own servers.

Google again shows the world that it can do better than M/$ who seems to think that sucking the money and souls out of it’s clients/customers is the way to go.

The story on TechCrunch is here and the original story is here.

Leave a comment to show your opinion either here or on the TechCrunch posting. Are you pro M/$ or pro open source?

Merlins Minute becomes The Mystic Bird

Written by ScottW on May 16th, 2008 | Filed under: News Briefs

Mystic BirdWell, due to too many errors in the database which is still under investigation, Merlins Minute has bit the dust. The connection to Wordpress.com was a bust too as it was needed for the Stats plugin as well as some others. So, seeing as I had this domain already available, The Mystic Bird was born to continue on.

This is gonna kill any SEO I had built up most likely but seeing as this was unavoidable…I’m just going to have to get over it. :(

I am presently working to get the images used in posts back and updating any incoming/outgoing links to other sites and blogs. For now, I’m leaving a redirect in place from the server to here from the Merlins Minute domain so that visitors will find the site again.

If you’ve found me via the old site’s url, please edit your bookmark (if any).

Thanks for reading!

Different Backup Method using Cron

Written by ScottW on Feb 25th, 2008 | Filed under: News Briefs

Am configuring things now as I write this and will post up with the details as soon as time permits but suffice it to say that having a cron job run to backup your blog’s database and then email it to you is the way to go! :)

More soon!
