Shopping for A Web Host

Written by ScottW on Sep 7th, 2007 | Filed under: Guest Writers

Shopping for a web hosting account in the past has been compared to every other type of commerce you can take place with. New home buying, grocery purchases - heck even shoe selling has even been compared to the act of buying a web hosting account.

The truth of the issue though is, it is nothing like those. Buying a new web hosting account takes information, skill, knowledge and luck. Without those four - your nothing but another schmuck.

Information

You always want to do your homework before you sign on the dotted line with any web hosting company out there. Find out how long they have been in business and see what other customers have had to say about them.

One really good place to research web hosts is WebHostingUnleashed.com. Along with reviews, they have a lot of company information and back end knowledge you might find useful.

Skill

How much skill does it really take to hit an order button? Not much. If you don’t know how to deal with tech support (and especially sales people) you might find yourself scratching your head and wondering what you were told.

Have the skill at asking the right questions. Don’t just say, “I need hosting, give me an account”. Let them know what you want the hosting account for, what you will be wanting to run there, and then ask them for their best suggestion for a web hosting plan they offer that matches your needs.

Knowledge and Luck

These last two are two that can not be forgotten either. Not knowing the difference between PHP and your DVDs might come up as a problem when looking at all those shiny check marks the web host your interested in gives you. Do your homework and learn what all those features are and what they mean you can do or not do - depending on the web host you sign up with.

Last but not least there is a lot of luck involved as well. You might find the perfect host on day one, and you might find the perfect host on day 101. Take the best ones from your list, compare them with each other and pick out the best. There’s no need to rush into these things because it is your money your spending after all.
