Ubuntu’s Hardy Heron has issues
Upgraded my desktop yesterday morning from Ubuntu’s 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) to the latest version out now - 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and right out of the gate I noticed that Firefox wasn’t my usual Firefox anymore. It was now Firefox3 Beta. WTH?!
Hardly a plugin that I use would be compatible with FF3B now. Even Google’s famous browser sync failed to install. Not good.
After some testing I decided to give FF3B the boot and install FF2 right from the Firefox website itself and all my usual plugins installed normally again without issue.
The only glitch so far is that links in emails or other apps won’t open in FF2 now. Not sure why just yet but after some more probing I’m sure someone will come up with an answer for that as well. Anyone else having problems with their install of 8.04? Sound? FF3B? Other apps?
Suffice it to say that at this point the upgrade went well with the only exceptions being a loss of sound for a short while until a quick search on the Ubuntu Forums turned up a remedy for that and the FF issue.
For those of you still running an older version of Ubuntu, you might want to hold off just a little while longer before upgrading to give the developers time to work out the bugs. You’ll be safe with your present installation for quite a while so be patient and when you do upgrade, you’ll be getting an OS that has had time to get the majority of the bugs worked out.
In the meantime, try visiting Ubuntu’s Forums for some info on what to expect and what’s going on. You’ll have a heads up on things this way.
Clarification:
I want to take this opportunity to clarify this post for others that come by here. The title of the post is in no way my intent to persuade anyone from using Ubuntu or upgrading from an earlier version. It’s intent was to bring out the few bugs I encountered right off in order to let others know what they might expect.
Upon visiting the Ubuntu Forums, it’s evident that there are other issues that others are experiencing besides these that are being addressed as they become known. This happens with a new version of an OS and is to be expected to some degree. This is why the bug reporting tool is there….to report these bugs and others so that the developers can address them as they become known and roll out a fix or patch. Usually very soon too.
Seeing as everyone is entitled to their opinion, I’ve stated mine and will continue to support Ubuntu as well as promote it as often as possible.

Your complaint is a bit superficial. Firefox 3 is much better than FF2. It is faster and has some great new features. However, that isn’t the point. You can easily install FF2 from the repositories and uninstall FF3 the same way.
To base your criticism on a minor inconvenience that can be remedied in seconds and counsel others to avoid the release because you were inconvenienced is rather lame and self-centered
I would counter the headline with Merlin has issues.
My criticism was aimed at Firefox3 Beta. Not Ubuntu 8.04. Please re-read my post and I’m sure that this time you’ll see that. The inconvenience was minor and easily solved as I stated above.
The developers are even saying that those that are presently running 6.10 LTS should wait just a bit longer for things to even out. So, I only echoed their recommendation here.
By the way, I removed the spammy link from your comment form entry. Save that stuff for elsewhere.
Sorry you’ve had the hard time. My experience has been awesome, but it could partly be due to my switching from PCLOS to Ubuntu 8.04.
It’s no big deal Zane. It happens sometimes. I’ve been fortunate in that all the previous installations of Ubuntu went pretty much issue-free. This one has had a few bugs that so far, I’ve been able to work around.
Glad to hear yours went great! How’s the practice coming?
i did a fresh installation an after a few updates now , i cannot connect to the internet
Sorry to hear that Cecil. Have you searched the Ubuntu forums to see if there’s something there that can help you? I’m assuming that you have a backup PC to do this with as you’ve posted here. There should be something there about this.
