Vacation!

Written by ScottW on Oct 30th, 2006 | Filed under: General

Now, let’s see just what I can get into…uhm, as far as projects go at least. ;) Still have those music files to burn to disc for the ride to work, a couple projects to complete, and some honey-do’s that need attending to as well.

Did I say something about a vacation? (sigh)

Firefox 2 is out!

Written by ScottW on Oct 25th, 2006 | Filed under: General

Yeah, our favorite browser has now gone to it’s next level of performance and excellence. I just downloaded it and enabled it.

Downside so far is that my plugins and themes will not work with it yet but the default theme is awesome in it’s own right. This browser can only get better!

I’ll report again on just how better after giving it a run for a while. I did install it to a different folder though…just in case. Always have a backup plan, you know.

If you want to give it a try, go here for the download: Firefox 2

While you’re at it, here’s another place to go visit that has tons of useful info on Firefox! It’s called Firefox Facts. Check it out for a lot of great tips on the browser of choice.

Update: More and more themes and plugins are becoming available. I now have most of mine back and am thoroughly enjoying this new version of Firefox.

Making the Big 5-0

Written by ScottW on Oct 22nd, 2006 | Filed under: General

Never would have thought it but I’m actually going to make it after all it seems. No early dash to the grave or anything. I’m a bit surprised but pleaseantly so.

It also seems I’m in dutch for coming home too early as my family had planned a party in my honor. My bad. They’ll get even I’m sure. ;)
To be honest with you, I didn’t expect it seeing as I was going to just try to slide into 50 as quietly as possible. :) So much for plans.

I am really gratefull for friends and family. They took the time to come out and help me celebrate last night. That meant a lot to me. Some of them I haven’t seen in a while either.

What really means a lot to me is the time spent with my family and friends. Not a lot of it happens either due to work constraints or some other scheduling conflict. One cannot have enough friends…they are the diamonds in an otherwise ordinary life. They are what keeps the fires going in intelligent conversation, good spirited debates, hanging out just for fun, and sharing a good laugh. You just can’t have enough of them.

Family time is also something to be cherished. Time with the grandkids is awesome. I see my daughter in my granddaughter and my grandson would like to see less of her. Ha! My granddaughter enjoys giving my grandson hell. Life is good.

So, you see…making the Big 5-0 was a good experience for me. It was brought in right by family and friends and I really appreciated it.

Now, if you’ll excuse me…I need another cup of coffee and some more aspirin. I seem to have a bit of a head-ache for some reason. Dunno how that happened. ;)

Libya buys laptops for schoolchildren - AP/CNN

Written by ScottW on Oct 13th, 2006 | Filed under: General

This surely is a good thing happening…..from CNN’s AP feed:

The government of Libya reached an agreement with an American nonprofit group to provide inexpensive laptop computers to all of its 1.2 million schoolchildren, The New York Times reported in Wednesday’s editions.

The project, scheduled to be completed by June 2008, could make Libya the first nation to enable all school-age children to connect to the Internet through educational computers, said Nicholas Negroponte, chairman of One Laptop per Child.

The $250 million deal, reached Tuesday, would provide the nation with 1.2 million computers, a server in each school, a team of technical advisers, satellite Internet service and other infrastructure.

One Laptop per Child, which has the support of the United Nations Development Program, aims to provide laptops to school-aged children worldwide at a cost of about $100 per computer. It has also reached tentative purchase agreements with Argentina, Brazil, Nigeria and Thailand.
